Did you read over the holidays about the price of tuna? It was reported by The Australian Financial Review (8.1.01) that, at the first auction of the year at Tokyoʼs fish market, a record price was paid for a single blue-fin tuna of $303,680. This, according to the paper, worked out at about $60 per serve of sushi. No ordinary sushi one imagines. It seems that this was an especially fine fish, from favoured waters, purchased to meet demand for New Year celebrations. In other words when all the facts were known, the price was justified.
We had some fun at the office with this article. After all, we have designed and built some very fine homes for less than the price of this single tuna. Could this be a shorthand answer to the oft-asked question “How much would one of your homes cost?”
“Oh…about one tuna.”
Read closely of course, the question at the top of this column does not quite make sense. We feel the same way about being asked “how much per square are Fasham homes?” We explain that just as there is no one Fasham design, there is no common price per square. An individually designed and constructed home, taking into detailed account—amongst other things—the contours of your land, the path of the sun, the placement of existing trees and the particular requirements of the owners is a very different proposition to a mass production project home. As with the tuna in the story, once all the facts are known the price is rarely an issue.
